K'inich Janaab' Pakal or Pakal "the Great" (March 23, 603 – August 28, 683) was an ahau or ruler of the Maya lordship of B'aakal, whose seat was Lakam Ha', today known as the archaeological site of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico.

In Mayan mythology, K'inich Ahau was the god of the Sun and patron of music; He is considered one of the invocations of Itzamná and was the ruler of the gods. K'inich Ahau comes from three words: K'iin (Sun), ich (face, eyes) and ajaw (priest, lord, king): The lord with the face or eyes of the sun.

King Pakal ruled from 615 to 683, becoming one of the longest-serving rulers in history. Pakal's government was characterized by having promoted the growth of the architectural work of Palenque and by having initiated the hieroglyphic records of its dynastic history.

The Mayans conceived the cosmos as a structure divided into three levels. At the top was the celestial vault, where astronomical phenomena took place. At the intermediate level was the world of men and the earth. The lower level, located under water, was occupied by the underworld.

In June 1952, a team of archaeologists, led by Alberto Ruz L'huillier, entered the Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque to find what is considered the most extraordinary example of funerary architecture in the Mayan area in the classic period: the Tomb of K'inich Janaab' Pakal.
